About Molenwiek Film

Joop Van Wijk (1950), studied Medicine in Utrecht, became MD in 1975 and worked in the field of Medicine in Africa and The Netherlands. In 1978 he took up filmmaking in the independent production company Molenwiek Film, Amsterdam. Since 1995, when co-founder Hillie Molenaar left the company, Joop Van Wijk is the sole owner of Molenwiek Film.

With Molenwiek Film, Van Wijk directed and (co)produced a large number of documentaries and short films, including the award winning The Factory (1980), Alter Ego (1986), Cannot Run Away (1988), The Sentence (1989), Isingiro Hospital (1993), Crossroads (1997), The Daily Nation (2000), Echoes of War (2005) and Landscapes Unknown, II (2008).

From 1994 on, Molenwiek Film is also involved in the (co)production of feature films, like Xime by Sana Na N'Hada (selected for Un Certain Regard, Cannes 1994) and The Dandelion Game (Selected for Cannes Junior 1996), directed by Peter Van Wijk.

Since 2009 Molenwiek Film develops and (co)produces documentary and fiction projects in close cooperation with Bonanza Films, Amsterdam, producer JB Macrander.

Joop Van Wijk participated in the sessions of European Audio Visual Entrepreneurs EAVE (1993), the Media Business School in Ronda, Spain (1996) and is a graduate of Company 1999/2000 - Management Training for Producers of the Maurits Binger Institute, Amsterdam.

Within the Amsterdam based Alter Ego Foundation, Van Wijk is active as a promoter of individual artists from The Netherlands and abroad, supporting special events like exhibitions and other cultural exchanges, not necessarily confined to film or visual arts.
