Echoes of War - a documentary about the consequences of war
"Echoes of War", Netherlands 2004, 70', 35mm, color, documentary/animation
In the feature length documentary film Echoes of War, the story of a little elephant who looses his father in a jungle war catapults children to share their memories, nightmares and dreams. The film interplays life stories of children survivors with animation to create a sensitive and moving portrayal of the consequences of war.
Wars and violence leave behind the dead, the wounded, the maimed, the victim and the witness. In the film Echoes of War, some of those left behind in Afghanistan, Colombia, Sierra Leone and New York share their memories, nightmares and dreams
The film takes us beyond the politics and rhetoric of statesmen, terrorists and soldiers. Filmed by an Award Winning team from The Netherlands, children survivors share how they find the courage to live on in the aftermath of war despite the horrors. We learn that they are heroes, with intense adult-like responsibilities; finding joy in memories; life amongst ruins and play amongst rubble.
Interplaying the life stories of real children with an animation of the storybook, the film is a sensitive and moving portrayal about the consequences of war for audiences of adults and children.
